Ilex crenata

Japanese Holly

Family: Aquafoliaceae

(I-lex: ancient  Latin name for Quercus Ilex, Cren-ata: obtusely toothed)

 

'Beehive'

A northern hardy, Japanese Holly with a compact globe habit and shiny green foliage. Developed by Dr. Elwin Orton. FIRST CHOICE AWARD '95. Zone 5, 3-4 feet, gr 1, Full Sun Partial Shade

  ‘Drops of Gold’ (I. crenatea, pp#14,420)

While most gold leafed hollies look sick at best, this unique new holly is quite attractive. The spring flush is a brilliant yellow which slowly changes into a pleasing dusty yellow hue. Coloration is most prominent on leaves exposed to the sun. Discovered by Ronald Byrnes of Geneva, OH.  Zone 5, 3-4 feet, gr 1, 

'Glory'

Small compact globe form with lustrous, dark green foliage. Survived -23oF with minimal damage. Zone 5, 4-5 feet, gr 1, Full Sun Partial Shade

Inkberry Holly 

Family: Aquafoliaceae (glabra: not hairy)         

'Compacta' ( F&F strain)

Our favorite selection of this hardy broadleaf evergreen! Glossy dark green foliage on a broad pyramidal plant. Branching is compact right down to the ground, never looking naked or leggy. A great alternative to boxwood! This particular selection comes from F&F nursery.

'Densa'

A wonderful, hardy broadleaf evergreen! Glossy dark green foliage on a broad, upright plant. Holds its foliage right down to the ground, never looking naked like some Inkberry cultivars.

'Blue Prince'

(I. rugosa x I. aquafolium) A hardy hybrid with lustrous deep green foliage. Used as the male pollinator for Blue Princess. A Conard-Pyle Co. introduction. AWARDS: CARY

RED BEAUTY

(I. x ’Rutzan’ ppaf 14, 308) A new and distinct holy that combines dark glossy foliage with an abundance of bright red fruit. Very densely branched, with a narrow conical form. Blue Prince is a suitable pollinator. A cross between Ilex x meserve and Ilex pernyi developed by Elwin Orton of Rutgers. Indigofera

False Indigo 

Family: Pea family

Indigofera kirilowii

A low, dense suckering shrub that makes an excellent ground cover or mass planting. Vivid rose-pink spikes, 4-5" long, adorn this shrub in June. The stems die back in severe winters so treat like a Buddleia in the north and cut down to the ground each spring. Available June

Indigofera pseudotinctoria  ‘Rose Carpet’

A prostrate rug that blooms from late June until frost. This is much lower and dense than the species that we saw growing wild in Korea. Rich rose-pink spikes, 1-2" long cover this little shrub. The stems often die back in severe winters so treat like a Buddleia in the north and cut down to the ground each spring. Available June. Zone 4, 4-8 inches

(It-ea: Greek name for Willow)

 

'Henrys Garnet'

Loads of long, white flowers in early summer and dark reddish purple fall color. Discovered by Mary Henry, introduced by Woodlanders and named by the Scott Arboretum. FIRST CHOICE AWARD '94. AWARDS: GMPA, GCA Zone 5, 3-4 feet, Fragrant, gr 1, Full Sun Partial Shade Shade

A new compact Sweetspire! Pure white flowers shoot like fireworks in the early summer horizon. Low mounded, compact stature is perfectly suited for flooding large banks, beds and borders.
