Berberis thunbergii

Barberry 

Family: Berberidaceae

(Berber-is: Arabic name; thunbergii: after Carl Peter Thunberg, Swedish botanist and plant explorer)    

‘Aurea’

Bright golden yellow foliage all season long. A big impulse item at the garden center.

'Aurea Nana' 

A real attention grabber! Compact habit and bright yellow foliage which turns bright red in autumn.

Zone 4, 24-36 inches, gr 1.5, Full sun Partial shade

 'Bagatelle'  

A hard to find selection from the Netherlands. Deep, dark red foliage and a more compact, rounded habit than 'Crimson Pygmy'. Available June. Zone 4, 12-16 inches, gr 2, Full sun  

BURGUNDY CAROUSEL

(B. thunbergii 'Bailtwo') Burgundy-purple foliage. Spreading habit that droops slightly. A Bailey Nursery selection that makes an excellent foundation plant or hedge. Zone 4, 3 feet, gr 1.5, Full sun

'Concorde' 

A dwarf ball with velvety, deep purple foliage. Superior to 'Crimson Pygmy'. Developed by Wavecrest Nursery. Recently added to the federal rust free barberry list. This is a beauty! Available June.

'Crimson Pygmy'  

(syn. atropurpurea 'Nana') Dense, low spreading, compact form and dark burgundy foliage. AWARDS: AGM Zone 4, 18-24 inches, gr 1.5, Full sun

A deep purple narrow column. This is an exquisite plant with real architectural beauty!

 'Lime Glow'

A lime-green version of ‘Rose Glow’. The bright foliage has enough green pigment to resist leaf burn that cam plague yellow-leafed varieties. Attractive all season long. Excellent fall color. Recently added to the Federal rust free barberry list. Available June

A low rounded, red leafed barberry with excellent uniformity. A great choice for low hedges or foundation plantings. Listed on the federal rust free barberry list. Zone 4, 3-3 1/2 feet, gr 1.5, Full sun

'William Penn'

(B. x gladwynensis) A dense mounded evergreen with lustrous, dark green foliage and bronze winter color. Numerous, showy, bright yellow flowers light it up in April and May. Introduced by the Henry Foundation for Botanical Research. Dirr calls it  "…the handsomest evergreen barberry.”

(Buddle-ia: after Adam Buddle, English botanist)

Fast to finish and easy to sell! They're fragrant, colorful and they attract butterflies. Bold, long blooming flowers ignite an explosion of summer sales. Treat them like a perennial in the north; cut them back heavily in the spring for better flowering. Zone 5, 4-8 ft, Fragrant, gr 0.5, Cut Branch, Full sun
